On 26th August, Prime Minister Narendra Modi explained the creation of 5 districts in Ladakh as historic for better administration and more progress. He congratulated the people of Ladakh and, in addition, appreciated their contribution toward this major decision.
After Home Minister Amit Shah announced it on X, PM Modi responded, “The decision to form five new districts in Ladakh is a significant step towards better governance and greater prosperity. Districts like Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang will now be brought under greater focus and resource infusions with the provisioning of key services and opportunities right to the doorsteps of people. Congratulations to all the residents of Ladakh.”
The Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to carve out these five new districts. Namely Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang—in order to decentralize governance. As a result, this will help ensure development in this remote, heterogeneous region. This is part of a set of measures by the Home Ministry to make Ladakh more developed and prosperous. Moreover, the initiative aims to enhance local governance. And ensure that progress reaches every corner of region.
Home Minister Amit Shah, on the same day, declared another remarkable step for the Union Territory. He shared that the creation of these new districts is part of a bigger strategy. Aimed at bringing improvement to development and governance in general. He added, “In pursuance of PM Shri @narendramodi Ji’s vision for a developed and prosperous Ladakh, MHA has decided to create five new districts. This will bring the administrative setup closer to the people and reinforce governance in every corner. The benefits of progress will now reach directly to the remotest areas.”
He said, “Thankful to Hon’ble PM Sh. @narendramodi Ji for this visionary decision to create five new districts in Ladakh. This step, without doubt, shall surely empower governance. And thereby bring prosperity to every nook and corner of Ladakh. ModiSarkar continues to deliver the promise of the empowered Ladakh.”
Ladakh, previously part of Jammu and Kashmir state, became an official Union Territory of India on October 31, 2019, following the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act.
