Protesters, including members of Hindu organizations, came on the roads at Dhalli in Shimla on Wednesday to protest against the alleged illegal construction of a mosque in Sanjauli.
The scene featured protesters holding tricolors and chanting slogans such as “Himachal Ne Thana Hai, Devbhoomi Ko Bachana Hai” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai.” Hindu groups had rallied against the mosque unauthorized construction. Consequently, the protests reflected their distress and frustration over the issue.
Naresh Chauhan, Media Advisor to the Chief Minister, of Himachal Pradesh, said that the BJP was trying to frame this issue as a Hindu-Muslim conflict. He made it clear that it is all about law and order. “I know the people who assembled there. They are BJP workers who have fought elections on BJP tickets. The BJP wants to give this a national dimension, but it is not a religious issue. It’s an issue of law and order. The Chief Minister has given an assurance that if there is any illegal construction, it will be disposed of appropriately. Political people who want to make political capital out of this will not get any support,” Chauhan said.
He further said that there are people who want to politicize the matter. “The issue relates to unauthorized construction. The matter is already sub-judice. Locals have not participated in the protest. Some BJP workers are raising slogans 2 km away from Sanjauli. Attempts to rally public support via social media have failed. People understand the real issue,” he pointed out.
Jairam Thakur, the Leader of the Opposition in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly, lashed out at the Sukhu government for delaying the action against the alleged illegal construction. Thakur stated, “Himachal Pradesh is known for its peaceful environment and minimal community conflict. However, government inaction has led to increased agitation. Authorities must address the sentiments of Hindus and local residents. Using BNSS 163 to suppress public dissent is unacceptable. Protests should remain peaceful and within legal limits. If the construction is unauthorized, resolve it immediately.”
Earlier in the day, police had deployed a force near the Dhalli tunnel in Shimla. The police department conducted proper checking of vehicles to avoid any incidents during the protest.
The situation in Shimla thus points toward continued tension and manifold views over the alleged illegal mosque construction. Contrasting statements from ruling government officials and opposition leaders underscore the multifaceted nature of the problem, blending legal concerns with political dynamics. Moreover, as things continue to develop, law enforcement and political leaders will play a crucial role in addressing the concerns of all parties. Consequently, their actions will significantly impact how the situation evolves.
