Former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, reached the Central Bureau of Investigation’s office on Saturday morning. His appearance comes as part of an ongoing investigation into the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor.
Following the directive of the Calcutta High Court, the West Bengal Health Department has withdrawn Ghosh’s appointment as Principal of National Medical College & Hospital. Ghosh resigned from RG Kar Medical College, following the sensational trainee doctor incident that triggered far-flung defamation in social media.
The gruesome rape and murder of the trainee doctor have sparked country-wide protests. The protests are pointing out an outcry over safety concerns in medical institutions. The Supreme Court of India took suo motu cognizance of the matter . The court ordered a National Task Force to recommend new safety guidelines for medical professionals all over the country. CBI is vigorously investigating the case.
Earlier, CBI team took a comprehensive look through RG Kar Medical Hospital and questioned the former principal as part of the probe. West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose met the victim’s family to condone the death and know what they are feeling. Bose said he would keep the information shared by family members confidential for now. He said that he had gone straight from Delhi for this purpose. He promised to communicate his findings in a sealed letter to the Chief Minister and discuss further actions later.
The Supreme Court has expressed grave concern over the safety of the doctors. Observing the court said “if women can’t safely go to work, what will happen to the right to equality.” The apex court has issued notice to the CBI, ordering it to produce a status report on the investigation into the rape case, and sought a report from the West Bengal government about the recent mob attack at RG Kar hospital on August 15.
The body of the trainee doctor was found on August 9 in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital’s seminar hall. The investigation is on, and justice, also ensuring safer conditions of work for medical professionals, is what the administration and people are looking forward to.
