A team of NIA, headed by a senior officer is reaching the site of the terror attack in Gagangir, Jammu and Kashmir. The attack happened on Sunday in the Ganderbal district where terrorists fired at a construction site killing a doctor and six construction workers.

The NIA team, headed by an officer of the rank of Superintendent of Police, would reach the attack site by noon from its regional branch in the Union Territory, sources said.

The attack occurred at a tunnel construction site on Srinagar-Leh national highway in Ganderbal district. The terrorists believed to be at least two in number, opened fire when the laborers and staff were returning to their camp in the Gund area of Ganderbal late in the evening.
The gunmen targeted a group comprising local and non-local laborers. Two laborers died on the spot. Three others along with the doctor later succumbed to their injuries. Five others are currently undergoing treatment for their wounds.

The attack has targeted the people, and that is of concern. It was targeted at unarmed civilians. The terrorists fired indiscriminately at the workers, leaving behind trails of death and injuries.

Soon after the blast, Union Home Minister Amit Shah took to social media. He termed it a “dastardly terror attack on civilians.” He further termed it “a despicable act of cowardice.” Shah said, “Those behind this heinous act will not be spared. It will receive the harshest response from our security forces.” He also conveyed his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this blast and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah also condemned the attack. He termed the act as “dastardly and cowardly” against non-local laborers. He tweeted, “Very sad news of a dastardly and cowardly attack on non-local laborers at Gagangir in Sonamarg region. These people were working on a key infrastructure project in the area. Militants killed two people and injured two to three others in the attack.” Omar condemned the attack in strong terms. And extended his condolences to the families of the victims.

A visit by the NIA to the site of the attack was to further investigate the incident to fix responsibility.
