Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder: BJP’s Shehzad Poonawalla Accuses TMC Government of Cover-Up

New Delhi [India]

Shehzad Poonawalla, National Spokesperson for the Bharatiya Janata Party, has charged the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress Government with concealing and suppressing information about the rape and murder of a second-year postgraduate student at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata.

Poonawalla, in a video posted on his social media handle, X, on Tuesday morning, attacked the TMC government over its alleged bid to hush up the incident. “Doctors across the country are protesting the murder and alleged sexual assault of a junior doctor, yet the Mamata Banerjee government is reportedly trying to cover up and suppress the facts”, he said.

In a further blow to the TMC administration, he accused them of either reluctance or reluctance in initiating a Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry, insinuating that there was a move to give the case the suicide tag. “The delay in pushing for a CBI probe is indicative of attempts to misrepresent the case,” he said.

Poonawalla also targeted leaders of the INDI opposition alliance, asking why they were mum on the issue. “The INDIA alliance leaders who, as part of a routine, chant slogans like ‘Ladki Hoon, Lad Sakti Hoon,’ about this case is something deafening. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Vadra, Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Uddhav Thackeray’s party, and Aam Aadmi Party are ‘conspicuously silent’ over the matter. ‘Their selective muteness at issues like Swati Maliwal’s and Sandeshkhali’s is quite vocal.’ “he said.

Poonawalla, however, was skeptical about the credibility of the justice served by the police administration under the present run of the TMC. “Is it even possible for there to be justice under a TMC-controlled police force?” he said.

The tragic incident involved the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. Doctors and students at various hospitals across the country are on an indefinite strike in response to the monstrous incident, demanding justice for the victim.

Following this incident, Kolkata Police, too, is planning to take the Head of the Chest Department of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for questioning.

Mamata Banerjee also said on August 12 that she had asked the police to speed up the arrest process of the accused. She further added that if the hands of the police go limp to bury the case soon, the same shall be given to the CBI. “I took immediate action and asked for the setting up of a fast-track court, following intimation from the Kolkata Police Commissioner regarding the incident. Even with nurses and security, it was not clear what had happened. The principal of RG Kar Hospital has resigned. Various investigation teams are trying to catch hold of the suspect.”. Should the police not be able to crack the case by Sunday, we will hand over the case to CBI,” she said.

Doctors have been demanding a probe by the CBI, the setting up of a fast-track court, and the constitution of a committee that would see implementation of the Central Protection Act in all hospitals.
