CBI Steps up RG Kar Rape, Murder Inquiry

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has stepped up its inquiry into the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College.

Sources say the investigating agency has found permission to conduct the polygraph test on the arrested accused.

On the 18th of August, the CBI team carried out 3D laser mapping at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital emergency ward as part of the further evidence collection.

Meanwhile, the West Bengal government formed a Special Investigation Team to probe financial irregularities at RG Kar Hospital in January 2021.

All this, and there has been a public outburst in the case, with leading figures from Bengal’s music industry staging protest rallies on August 19. Besides, artists like Saheb Chatterjee, the actor, and Mir Afsar Ali, the radio personality, hit the streets demanding justice for the victim.

The singer-actor emphasized that the punishment meted out to the culprits has to be stringent. He said, “We need to set up an example that will deter such heinous acts in the future. This issue goes beyond the boundary of Kolkata and India; this has to be an international concern. We demand complete justice, not half-truths.”

In a repeating message of the same feelings, the singer Soumyojit cried to effect change and justice as a matter of great urgency. He said, “We as artists are here to protest and raise our demand for justice.”.

The radio personality Mir Afsar Ali said— “We have been made to hit the streets. As a human of the creative courtyard, we want to flash our humane attributes by registering our protest amid all the pandemonium. We must make ourselves heard.”

That occurred as a tragic event on August 9, with the rape and murder of an on-duty postgraduate training doctor at RG Kar Medical College. The case has, in general, given rise to various civil societies and medical professionals demonstrating on the streets to demand proper capital punishment for the accused and better safety measures.

The Supreme Court of India is also watching the situation closely, with Chief Justice DY Chandrachud slated to hear the matter on Tuesday.
