Ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections, Bharatiya Janata Party has come up with a new advertisement asking the voters, to “Say No to Congress.” The advertisement targets the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance. And projects many incidents from the past to prove their point. And apparently malign the image of the Congress party and its tenure in power.
This ad campaign includes a host of big events, like the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, the 2003 Mumbai serial blasts, the 7/11 train bombing. And the 2010 Pune blast, quoting the tragedies for questioning the then government. It also referred to the Gowari massacre and Palghar Sadhu lynching case to raise doubt on how law and order was handled under the Congress-led government.
Apart from issues related to security, the BJP ad takes up corruption issues. It mentions Remdesivir black-marketing by a Congress official during the COVID-19 pandemic and points to mismanagement of finance in BMC. The ad repeats, “Say No to Congress” with the MVA logo in the background, set against the 2007 Mumbai terror attack when the Congress was at the reins of affairs in the state.
With just two days left for the election, Congress has also started getting ready for the battle. The All India Congress General Secretary Randeep Surjewala held a press conference on Sunday where he cornered the BJP-led government. He termed the BJP as the “Bhagoda Jutao” company and listed four big issues, which he termed the “four M’s”. Mumbai mortgaged, Mahayuti guns and gundaraj, Mahayuti Mehngai, and the rape of Maharashtra’s land by the “Khoka Group vultures.”
Surjewala particularly attacked BJP’s relations with industrialist Adani, saying that Adani now controls the major infrastructure in Mumbai. Including the airport and the electricity supply. He further attacked the sale of land in the Dharavi Development Project to Adani as a bad deal for the people of Maharashtra. Surjewala went further to accuse the BJP government of allowing a rise in crime. Especially in Mumbai, which he said reports 14 crimes daily, making it the most dangerous city in India.
On inflation too, Surjewala went all guns blazing, attacking how Chief Minister Eknath Shinde was operating the finances. Asking how many tenders and contracts the government had awarded in the past year.
Surjewala urged voters to reflect on these issues as they head to the polls. Calling for a change in leadership in Maharashtra.
