The Andaman police, on Thursday, made a blistering attack on the heroin trafficking network and seized 2.075 kg of heroin valued at Rs 14 crore in the international market.
Superintendent of Police for South Andaman, IPS Niharika Bhat, briefed the media on Thursday. On August 24, police received information about an individual in possession of heroin. Acting swiftly, they arrested the suspect and seized 1.295 kg of heroin from him. They immediately filed an FIR.
Further investigation revealed that the arrested suspect implicated three additional individuals. The probe showed that the heroin had traveled by sea to Port Blair and then continued to Kolkata.
In Kolkata, police continued their investigation and seized an extra 798 grams of heroin. They found that other individuals in Kolkata had smuggled the remaining heroin. So far, authorities have arrested seven people in connection with the case.
SP Niharika highlighted the rising drug abuse cases in the Andaman Islands. In response, police are intensifying efforts to combat this issue. They are conducting extensive awareness campaigns to educate the youth about the dangers of drug use and alcoholism, aiming to prevent such issues from escalating further.
“We are working hard to inform the youth about the harmful effects of drug abuse and alcohol,” SP Niharika said. “We aim to prevent such cases and keep our community safe.”
More than that, SP Niharika called on the people of Andaman to help them in this respect. She called on the public to inform police about drug smuggling, transportation, and consumption.
“I appeal that people in Andaman must come forward with whatever information is there regarding drug-related activities,” she said. “Your cooperation is essential in solving this menace effectively.”
In short, the Andaman police have been taking great leaps against narcotics trafficking. They also hope for continuous investigation with people’s cooperation to thwart the expansion of narcotics and save the islanders from the abomination.
