SC Resumes Suo Motu Hearing in RG Kar Case

The Supreme Court on Tuesday resumed its hearing suo motu regarding the rape and murder incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud is heading the bench in this highly sensational case.

This intervention by the court comes after unrelenting protests by junior doctors in Kolkata. The protests started after the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. During the last hearing on September 9, the Supreme Court had asked the protesting doctors to go back to work by 5 pm on September 10. But the protests continue.

Succumbing to the agitation, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of West Bengal relented to the demands of the doctors. She announced that there would be a change of guard by replacing Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal, the Deputy Commissioner of Kolkata Police, North, and two senior Health Department officials.

During the hearing today, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal apprehended the broadcasting of court proceedings. Sibal highlighted the seriousness of the broadcasting of the proceedings. And discerned that he appeared for the state of West Bengal and not the accused.

Notwithstanding these apprehensions, CJI Chandrachud refused to stay the live telecasting of the proceeding while underlining it as public interest. He has reassured that he will address any threats or harassment faced by members of the Bar with appropriate measures.

The CBI, thereafter, filed a fresh status report as directed by the court. The Supreme Court reviewed the report. And affirmed, “This shows that the CBI is determined to uncover the truth.” The Court noted that the CBI had addressed all issues, including those related to the post-mortem process.

The Court emphasized that the CBI needs sufficient time for a thorough investigation. The bench committed to ensuring a fair and comprehensive inquiry into the case.

Amidst the ongoing public outcry and prolonged protests. Additionally, the Supreme Court has stepped in to seek justice for the victim and address the concerns of the medical community.

As the investigation progresses, the Court ensures that all procedures are followed and addresses any emerging issues. The CBI faces intense scrutiny, and the Supreme Court remains committed to handling the case with the utmost seriousness.

The outcome of this high-profile case could significantly impact the legal system and public trust in law enforcement. As the case also continues, the Supreme Court will remain in the spotlight, striving to deliver justice in this troubling matter.
