WhatsApp is bringing one of the largest privacy features to fight one of its largest problems—spam—in its latest beta- WhatsApp PIN.
The beta version 2.24.18.2 for Android includes the feature. It will introduce a Username PIN system that enhances security and reduces spam messages, according to GSMArena. This functionality will provide users with the ability to set a four-digit PIN in addition to their username.
WhatsApp is adding another layer of security by implementing this PIN system. Now, people that you’ve never spoken to will no longer be able to message you just because they know your username. According to WhatsApp, this new measure aims to significantly reduce spam and enhance overall privacy for users.
According to GSM Arena, a company spokesperson commented, “Once implemented, this feature should greatly cut down on spam, which has been a prevalent issue on WhatsApp.” This PIN feature will require anyone who wants to message you for the first time to know both your username and the PIN. Without both, they won’t be able to send you a message.
On the other hand, chatting with contacts previously interacted with will remain unaffected by the new username and PIN system. Thus, existing chats will continue as usual, ensuring a smooth transition for already-established connections.
While all of this does sound very promising, the feature is still in beta testing. There’s no word on when it will be released to the general public. Given WhatsApp’s development pace, the Username PIN feature will likely not become mainstream until later this year. The GSM Arena reported this timeline.
As WhatsApp continues to perfect this feature, users need to keep up with the latest beta releases only. It’s nice of WhatsApp to be proactive about privacy in the app. A username PIN will prove quite effective in enhancing this feature.
