President-elect Donald Trump announced Sunday that he named Commissioner Brendan Carr to Federal Communications Commission Chairman.
The FCC is the United States federal government regulatory arm for communications by radio, television, wire, satellite, and cable for all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories. It operates independently, with oversight from Congress, but bears the critical responsibility for enforcement of the nation’s communication laws and regulations.
Brendan Carr tweeted his thanks, saying: “Thank you, President Trump! I feel humbled and honored to serve as Chairman of the FCC. Now we get to work – United States.”
In a statement, the President praised Carr for his leadership and qualifications for the post. Trump said, “I am pleased to announce that Commissioner Brendan Carr will be Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission. Currently, Commissioner Carr serves as the senior Republican on the FCC, where he has built a proven record. I nominated him to the FCC in 2017, and the United States Senate has confirmed him three times.”
Trump also told Breitbart News Carr is a staunch supporter of free speech and economic growth: “He fights as a warrior for Free Speech, fighting regulatory overreach that stifles Americans’ freedom and strangles our economy. As Chairman, he will work to stop the regulatory burdens that hurt American job creators and innovators. He will also ensure attention is brought to rural America.“
Carr has been at the FCC since 2012, previously serving as the agency’s General Counsel before the FCC elevated him to Commissioner. He often plays an instrumental role in formulating U.S. communications policy. Before joining the Commission staff, for ten years he practiced law, focusing on appellate litigation and regulatory matters. In addition to his work for the Commission, he clerked for Judge Dennis Shedd of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
Carr graduated from Georgetown University and also attended the Columbus School of Law at the Catholic University of America, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He served as an editor to the Catholic University Law Review.
He announced immediately after his victory in the 2024 presidential election. Garnering 295 electoral votes against his Democratic opponent Kamala Harris, who had 226 votes. With the election now behind him, President-elect Trump lost no time in firming up his team. Particularly in foreign policy and national security, in the run-up to the swearing-in next January 2025.
This appointment of Brendan Carr as FCC Chairman also reflects Trump’s continued focus on reforming communications policy to support economic growth.
