Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday strongly condemned the recent violence at the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton, Ontario, branding the attackers as “divisive” and “hateful”. But he did not address the involvement of Khalistani separatists in the incident.
In a speech in the House of Commons on Wednesday, Trudeau claimed the violence was not related to either of Canada’s two main ethnic groups- the Sikhs or Hindus.
He stated that those behind the violence, who are inciting division and hatred, do not represent the Sikh or Hindu communities in Canada. But he did not directly blame Khalistani extremists, who are suspected of being involved in the attack.
Trudeau added that Diwali and Bandi Chhor Diwas are times when communities unite to celebrate their diversity and strength. And that Canada will continue to promote unity among its people.
Trudeau made these remarks after Khalistani supporters reportedly attacked Hindu-Canadian worshippers at the Hindu Sabha Mandir on Sunday.
Hindu Canadian Foundation, a non-profit organization supporting the Hindu community, shared a video demonstrating this attack. According to the foundation, Khalistani terrorists concentrated the attacks on women and children during the violence. This attack raised concern within the Hindu community in Canada and at an international level.
The Indian High Commission in Canada strongly reacted to the violence, condemning the “violent disruption” caused by “anti-India elements.” The High Commission described such incidents as deeply concerning. He underlined that local authorities must make security arrangements for any future events.
The statement read, “On November 3, we witnessed a violent disruption, orchestrated by anti-India elements. Outside the consular camp, which was co-organized with the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton.”
The High Commission showed disappointment because the disrupting activities fell on a day of routine consular activity. They planned the events well in full cooperation with local partners.
The statement expressed, “We are deeply concerned for the safety of applicants, including Indian nationals, who rely on these events.”
This incident has generated broad criticism internally in Canada and also internationally. The fast-growing influence of Khalistani separatists in Canada. And their violent performances against the Hindu community have been under discussion and critique by many.
This incident once again demonstrated the continuous tension among various community groups in Canada. And also highlighted the need to take more stringent action against the radical elements.
