At the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will pay a visit to Russia from October 22-23, he will attend the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, chaired by Russia.
During the visit, PM Modi is expected to meet with other BRICS leaders and invited guests individually. The MEA contended that “Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security” is the prime focus of the Summit. It will allow leaders to hold discussions on big-ticket global issues and take stock of BRICS initiatives.
It all began when the BRICS countries-Brazil, Russia, India, and China-came together for the first time in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 2006. The first full-fledged BRICS summit held in Yekaterinburg, Russia, in 2009. In 2010, South Africa joined the group, and the grouping extended form BRICS: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
BRICS accounts for the large emerging economies. The group comprises 41% of the world’s population, holds 24% of the global GDP, and accounts for more than 16% of global trade.
In September, President Putin invited PM Modi for a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan. Putin termed PM Modi a “good friend” when he met with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval in Russia. In this respect, the Kremlin issued a statement quoting Putin as saying, “We will be expecting Mr Modi in Kazan. I also suggest holding a bilateral meeting on October 22 to review the work done from his previous visit to Moscow and discuss plans.”
This will be PM Modi’s second visit to Russia in 2024. He visited Moscow in July to attend the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit. During that visit, President Putin and PM Modi held a bilateral meeting. And Russia conferred PM Modi with its highest civilian award, the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle, at the Kremlin. The two leaders visited the Rosatom Pavilion at Moscow’s VDNKh Exhibition Centre.
