Tragically, Mariah Carey has reported that her mother, Patricia, and sister, Alison, have died on the same day. The Grammy-winning artist confirmed for PEOPLE magazine her deep grief over the loss.
55-year-old Mariah Carey shared in a statement: “My heart goes out to everyone who is suffering or losing their loved ones. I have lost my mother this past weekend.” The singer didn’t detail the causes of death for either. But she requests that people respect her privacy during this extremely difficult period of her life.
Patricia Carey was a very popular opera singer. A highly accomplished Juilliard-trained opera singer and vocal coach, she achieved great success in her field. She married Alfred Roy Carey, and together they had three children: Alison, Mariah, and Morgan. However, with their marriage gradually going towards professional success and the joys of raising the family was the fact that Patricia and Alfred also experienced the wanes in their marriage. That eventually ended in divorce when Mariah was just three years old.
That, between Mariah and her mother, was troubled, grossly opposed at many points by how high and low emotions ran. As the singer herself revealed in her 2020 memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey,” she discussed their tumultuous relationship. She said it was full of “pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment“. One filled with contradictions and conflicting emotions.
Despite their rocky relationship, Mariah and Patricia managed to stay together. An example of a breathtaking moment of reconciliation came on the 2010 special “Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You”. On ABC when the mother-daughter duo performed the duet of “O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus,” including shared joy and harmony.
Mariah elaborated on such a point in her memoir, reflecting just how emotionally and physically hard it was to be having a relationship with her sister, Alison. At times, it was considered “emotionally and physically safer” for Mariah to avoid interactions with Alison or their brother, Morgan.
During this time of great sorrow, Mariah has thanked all concerned for their support. And requested privacy while coming to terms with this great loss. She found comfort in the fact that she had spent quality time with her mom before her untimely death. Finally smiling to the last minute they were together.
