New Zealand’s Tim Southee has decided to retire from Test cricket after the home series against England. The 35-year-old fast bowler, who has opted for retirement ahead of the first Test in Christchurch on November 28, could well play the last game of his career at his home ground, Seddon Park in Hamilton, just before Christmas.
The speedster, who has been an integral member of New Zealand for more than 17 years, said the reason for his decision was looking ahead. “Last year was the [50-over] World Cup, and earlier this year we had the T20 World Cup. We’ve had an exciting run in Test cricket lately. As I near the end of this period, I look ahead. The time seems appropriate, coming as it does with a big series against England, a team against which I played for the first time years ago,” he said. Southee looked back at his career and termed it as a “dream come true.” He further said, “To play for New Zealand at such a young age was so special. It’s gone by so fast. Looking back, I never imagined I’d be here 17 years later. It’s been an honor to represent my country.
Although Southee has retired from Test cricket, he has not ruled out his future in white-ball cricket. The right-arm pacer has kept the door open to play the white-ball series against Sri Lanka after Christmas. He also expressed a desire to play the World Test Championship Final at Lord’s if New Zealand qualifies for that.
Southee, New Zealand’s leading wicket-taker across all formats, ends his international career after 770 international wickets, four ICC Men’s Cricket World Cups, seven ICC Men’s T20 World Cups, and the 2021 World Test Championship Final. Proud of his achievements, and proud to let others have a crack too: “It’s time to let others step up and take over,” he said.
The off-seamer also spoke to the timing of his retirement, especially with the England series. “Test cricket holds a special place in my heart. To end my career in a series against England, at grounds that mean so much to me, feels perfect, ” he said.
Southee thanked his family, friends, coaches, and fans who have supported him through it all. “It’s been an amazing ride, and I wouldn’t change a thing, ” he added.
