India Offers Aid to Flood-Hit Nepal

Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava, offered deep condolences over the heavy flooding and landslides that hit the country last week. He reiterated India’s pledge to help the Government and people of Nepal in the wake of floods. Concerning the relief and rehabilitation aspects.

He showed solidarity by relaying a message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. Srivastava told the Nepali leadership: “India stands in solidarity with the people of Nepal at this difficult time.”

He said, “On behalf of the Government of India, I offer sincere condolences for the recent floods causing immense loss of life and property.” He also reiterated that India is ready to provide all possible assistance as needed for the relief and reconstruction efforts.

Following the heavy rainfall during the last week of September, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority warned of more rain across Bagmati and Koshi. The authority requested travelers to travel with caution due to the chances of landslides and flash floods. They stated that heavy rainfall is expected until Friday and that weakened land might cause more damage.

According to the APF, the rain-induced disaster has so far reported 241 deaths. While 29 others remain missing.

Weather stations in Kavrepalanchowk recorded record-high rainfall on September 28. While the Khopasi weather station reported 331.6mm, Panchkhal reported 232.5mm and Dhulikhel recorded 224.6mm of rain. A total of 22 other weather stations across Nepal also received record rain on the same day despite a forecast for above-average rainfall this year.

While monsoon rains in Nepal normally create incredible problems. The country with nine of the world’s ten highest peaks had already expected above-average rainfall this year. Affecting an estimated 1.8 million people. The NDRRMA projected that approximately 412,000 households would be affected by the monsoon-related disasters.

This usually extends from June 13 to September 23, but this year, it stretched into the late part of October. This monsoon cloud had entered Nepal three days in advance on June 10. Last year, the season started on June 14, a day after the normal commencement of the season.
