For the first time, filmmaker Ektaa Kapoor has spoken about her next project, The Sabarmati Report, based on the 2002 Godhra train burning incident. She explained why she needed to tell the entire story of such a tragic incident and why she chose to bring it to the screen.
Speaking on the occasion of a media interaction, Ektaa said going back to the origin and some other aspects of the Godhra incident are important. The film, she said, will cover all angles in lesser-known facts on what transpired to lead to the tragedy. Ektaa said the story focuses on the action from the very beginning of the incident and its build-up, which people have often overlooked.
She said, “I am telling the genesis of the event. The first aspect of it is without undermining the others. This part- how it all started- has not been reported enough. That’s why we decided to highlight it. It is not about one side of the story, but it’s about the beginning and how it all happened.” As Ektaa elaborated, the film does not try to take sides but rather provides an understanding of how such an incident originally took place.
The film also touches on wider social issues. Ektaa shared her personal experiences of being targeted for her cultural practices. She recollected, “I used to wear a teeka and bangles, and people used to tease me. There was a time when we were ashamed of our traditions. If we spoke in English or wore Western clothes, we received more respect. This film depicts that reality.” Her reflections on the challenges of cultural identity enrich the story further.
The dangers involved, Vikrant Massey, another lead actor in Mumbai at the trailer launch, spoke: “I have received threats for being part of this project, which delves into the very controversial Godhra incident.” Vikrant says he faces risks but remains committed to telling the truth through the film.
Helmed by Dheeraj Sarna, The Sabarmati Report also features Raashii Khanna and Riddhi Dogra in leading roles. Vikrant plays the role of a journalist who investigates the truth behind the 2002 train burning incident.
The Sabarmati Report, scheduled for release on November 15, will spark debates. And provide a comprehensive view of one of modern India’s most sensitive and controversial events.
