On Friday, singer-rapper AP Dhillon dropped his highly-anticipated new EP The Brownprint. An artist who had blended Punjabi beats with modern music, Dhillon had shared details about the release of the EP through his Instagram account:
Dhillon informed fans of the EP’s title in his post. “I’m naming my EP ‘The Brownprint’ because I wanna show our community that there are so many avenues to show Punjabi music,” he said, adding: “I want us to think of the bigger picture and tap into the impossible. It’s no longer about creating history; it’s about building a legacy for future generations.”
Distributed under the label Republic Records, The Brownprint is an absolute blend of powerful features and emotional cuts. Long-term collaborator Shinda Kahlon features his vocals on the title track “Brownprint,” a very aggressive anthem extolling the virtues of being true, staying loyal, and strong in the face of everything as one declares invincibility and salutes the resilience of the Punjabi people.
The EP also features a string of international collaborations. One of them is “Losing Myself,” featuring Gunna from Atlanta. This soul-shaking song sings of love, loss, and heartbreak. Notably, Dhillon’s father, Rashpal Singh, makes his songwriting debut with this track. The combination of Dhillon’s dynamic vocals with Gunna’s compelling presence creates a powerful and emotional number.
Furthermore, songs like “Distance” and “After Midnight” address the most intricate issues of human relationships. These tracks vividly portray abandonment, betrayal, and separation in ways seldom seen. Consequently, they add significant depth and emotional resonance to the EP.
Apart from these tracks, The Brownprint comprises “Sweet Flower,” “315,” “To Be Continued,” and “Distance.” Each track embodies the multidimensional element of Dhillon’s personality and musical concept. The EP collaboration track “Bora Bora” presents Ayra Starr for the first time in Indian subcontinental music. Her feature has brought to light the commitment of Dhillon to a fusion of international elements with his roots of Punjabi origin.
AP Dhillon produced most of the EP himself but received support from a range of producers and collaborators. AzizTheShake, Luca Mauti, Ramoon, Roc Legion, Gray Hawken, Tompa, Ben10k, Intense, Chris LaRocca, La+ch, Brendan Thomas, Madeleine Kaye, and Herman Atwal contributed to the project. Consequently, these contributions helped give the EP a diverse sound and rich texture. Moreover, their collaborative efforts added depth and variety to the overall musical experience.
An announcement for The Brownprint came earlier this month with the release of the Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt starrer, “Old Money.” All this build-up created quite a frenzy in anticipation of Dhillon’s new venture.
Thus, The Brownprint forms a milestone in the career of AP Dhillon. Dhillon’s work will push and set new standards in the music industry. By blending traditional Punjabi flavors with contemporary tastes, he creates a unique sound. Moreover, with powerful collaborations and emotional depth, the EP has the potential to make a significant global impact.
