Yerin Ha Joins 'Bridgerton' S4 as Sophie 'Baek'

There’s a reason for Netflix’s popular series ‘Bridgerton’ fans to cheer as the streaming platform has confirmed that Yerin Ha will star in season 4. The Australian actress will star as Sophie Baek, who becomes the romantic interest of Benedict Bridgerton.

Prolific in shows like ‘Halo’ and ‘Dune: Prophecy,’ Ha’s character is inspired by Sophie Beckett from Julia Quinn’s novels. However, the show has made a notable change: her character’s surname is now “Baek,” honoring Ha’s Korean heritage. This decision followed a consultation between Ha and showrunner Jess Brownell.

“A name is the first bit of identity you share with the world, and changing it can be powerful,” Ha said. She added, “Making Sophie’s name fit someone who looks like me is empowering. All credit to Jess.” The choice of “Baek” over “Beckett” reflects a personal touch and cultural sensitivity in furthering Ha’s connection to the role.

This season begins with the tale of Sophie Beak and a story of hardship. Introduced as a young woman struggling to work for a demanding upper-class employer. This all changes overnight when, as a masked guest at the masquerade ball thrown by Violet Bridgerton, she encounters none other than Benedict Bridgerton played by Luke Thompson.

Ha is enthusiastic about the role, noting that Sophie is thrown into the deep end. “What attracted me to Sophie was how much she struggles and strives throughout,” said Ha. “Whether it’s fighting her status within society or hiding her emotions from Benedict, it’s a powerful journey.”

Both Ha and Thompson have started rehearsals with the dance sequences that will tell their story. Quipping at a press junket, Thompson said he has already stepped on Ha’s toes once. “Those are just very special, very vulnerable moments,” he declared, speaking of the moments when dance captures his emotional bond with his co-star.

She has felt welcomed with open arms since joining an already-established cast. She appreciated those gestures from Claudia Jessie, Nicola Coughlan, and Hannah Dodd. “It means a lot for someone new to the show. I consider myself so lucky to be part of such a family,” said Ha.

On related news, showrunner Jess Brownell did tease the fans as to what they can look forward to when it comes to Benedict’s storyline: “We will explore how Benedict learns to exist in the world and reconcile breadth with depth.” Brownell teased. “Coming to thehe next season of Bridgerton, fans might just see more of his character fleshed out.”
