Ecolab, a global leader in water solutions, said that water conservation and sustainability are top-of-mind concerns among Indian consumers. The 2024 Ecolab Watermark™ Study reported significant strides in water conservation across the country with as many as 76 percent of the consumers being aware of the government initiatives to promote sustainability and 78 percent cognisant of business efforts to spur the green revolution. At the same time, the study shows several industries, especially manufacturing and food & beverage, for which an increase in water demand is foreseen.
This study has also pointed out that water conservation has become a central issue for consumers. With only 4% of the world’s freshwater resources and 17.5% of the global population, India is under severe water stress. Northern regions are already facing the depletion of groundwater resources, and if this trend in water use continues, demand could outstrip supply as early as 2030.
Key findings from the Ecolab Watermark™ Study include:
- Water Conservation is India’s Top Priority:
93% of Indian consumers consider clean and safe water a major environmental concern, while 90% cite access to water as a major issue. - Commitment to Water Conservation:
More than 70% of Indian consumers believe government and business leaders are committed to water conservation and climate action. The study shows that 76% of the people rate government efforts the highest, while 78% commend business initiatives. - Impact on Consumer Behavior:
The study shows that as many as 86% of Indian consumers have changed their purchasing habits. Due to environmental concerns: many are now buying from eco-friendly brands. Choosing sustainable products, or completely avoiding companies with poor water practices.
According to Manish Khandelwal, Managing Director of Ecolab India: “While India is getting into more and more water challenges. It’s nice to see improvements in sustainable practices. The next step is to accelerate the adoption of solutions that ensure a sustainable water future.”
The study also identified the food and beverage segment at 39%. And manufacturing at 30% as some of the biggest water users in India. This certainly justifies the reason these sectors need to consider water-saving approaches to meet the growing concerns about water scarcity.
In addition, India faces many challenges in managing water consumption, especially in water-intensive industries such as thermal power, textiles, and steel, which definitely demand urgent attention in terms of improving water efficiency and treating wastewater.
Ecolab continues to deliver solutions that enable businesses to save water, advance sustainability, and provide for long-term water security for generations to come.
