Thriving in Solitude: The Benefits of Living Alone in a Busy World

The concept of being alone versus feeling lonely needs clarification because people often confuse these terms. Many mistakenly equate them, spreading a misconception that shows a lack of understanding about well-being. Feeling lonely typically stems from a place of emptiness, while being alone is more of a personal choice.

Psychologically, loneliness is associated with disappointment and remorse. To put it simply, loneliness often arises when life’s hardships overwhelm you, and feelings of sadness cloud your mind. This disconnection from one’s surroundings can deepen the sense of isolation. Psychology refers to loneliness as a result of a victim mentality—a mindset where one believes others are responsible for their condition. The inability to take accountability can distort one’s mental state, becoming a root cause of mental health issues like depression, anxiety, insomnia, bipolar disorder, and more.

On the other hand, choosing to be alone can also come from disappointment, but without despair or regret. You might be unhappy with the outcome of a situation, but you don’t feel the need to blame others or carry that emotional burden onto anyone else. Instead, you choose to reflect on it by yourself. This desire for solitude encourages you to engage in self-examination, often referred to as introspection or shadow work. Just as we break down subjects into smaller parts when studying for an exam, living alone provides the time and space to analyze the subject of your life—”YOU.”

Living alone may sound daunting at first, but if approached properly, it can be highly beneficial. The process of introspection requires your own guidance. You cannot rely on anyone else to navigate this journey because the person who knows you best is you.

However, you need to approach it mindfully and with caution. Professionals can offer helpful guidance, but you must do the main work yourself. During this time, it’s vital to focus on your passions, engage in activities that make your soul happy, like reading or writing, and most importantly, show gratitude for the good in your life. Acknowledging your blessings is a great way to appreciate what you have.
