Shawn Mendes Drops ‘Nobody Knows’ at MTV VMAs

Shawn Mendes Drops 'Nobody Knows'

Shawn Mendes brought the house down with a new single, “Nobody Knows,” during the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards. The show was an emotional moment during the highly energetic night of performances moving the show along.

He appeared in a very minimal setting with just the acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and drums. His soulful vocals stood out against the evening’s other performances, The Hollywood Reporter says.

“Nobody Knows” is a single off of Mendes’ upcoming self-titled album, “Shawn,” set to release on October 18. The song shows a more deeply introspective and emotional take on Mendes’s perspective after the breakup he and Camila Cabello just went through. One of the strong lines of that passion encapsulates, “When you’re so in love and souls touch but it’s still not enough where does it go? Nobody knows.”

His forthcoming album, “Shawn,” will be his next release since 2020 when “Wonder” came out. According to The Hollywood Reporter, among the collaborations included in the album are those from popular figures Scott Harris, Mike Sabath, Nate Mercereau, and Eddie Benjamin. The songwriting contributions included Grammy-winning songwriter Amy Allen and producer Ethan Gruska.

In an emotional post published to Instagram, Mendes shared what the process was leading up to the album’s release. He waxed reflective, saying, “Music really can be medicine.” Mendes spoke of his personal growth, noting, “Two years ago, I felt like I had no idea who I was. A year ago, I couldn’t step into a studio without falling into complete panic. So to be here right now with 12 beautiful finished songs feels like such a gift.

He was also grateful to those who supported him through this time. Mendes says, “Honestly, thank god for my friends and family. Life can be brutal, but having a small group of people you deeply trust walk you through makes it so much better.”

There are also fans speculating that songs from the album may discuss his past relationship with Cabello. Vulnerability and doubt became a common exploration for Mendes in his most recent single release, “Why Why Why,” as he mentions a pregnancy scare: “I thought I was about to be a father/Shook me to the core, I’m still a kid.”
