Fatty liver is a condition where an excess amount of fat builds up in your liver, it affects liver function and causes liver injury.

According to Shloka Joshi, a classical Hatha Yoga teacher, fatty liver is classified into two types. Non-alcoholic, occurs in people who either don’t drink or drink a little, while, alcoholic fatty liver, is caused due to over alcohol consumption. This further leads to a condition, where the liver becomes inactive.

Symptoms-

“Initially, one may feel tired or experience discomfort or pain in the right side of the upper abdomen, often after meals. In advanced stages, one might experience severe tenderness in the upper abdomen, loss of appetite, nausea, weakness, weight loss, abdominal distention (ascites), pale-colored stools, muscle wasting, and swelling in the legs,” outlines Joshii.

Causes-

  1. Consuming too much alcohol (a male who drinks 15 or more drinks per week and a female who drinks more than 8 can easily get fatty liver or liver failure over 10-15 years.
  2. Obesity
  3. Insulin resistance
  4. Type 2 diabetes
  5. Metabolic syndrome
  6. High cholesterol levels (raised triglycerides)
  7. Medicine side effects
  8. Pregnancy
  9. Genetic disorders
  10. Infections like hepatitis C

Joshi has shared 5 foods that will help you cut out fatty liver-

Lemon-

Take a lemon and cut it in half, now squeeze it in a glass of warm water, and drink it on an empty stomach. This will help you flush out all the toxins and improve the liver’s health.

Papaya-

Eat a full bowl of papaya on an empty stomach, this will help in reducing the inflammation of the liver. It is a good source of fiber, minerals, and antioxidants including vitamins A, C, and E.

Apples-

Due to its rich source of pectin, it helps in cleaning the body.

Fatty Liver can be prevented with the intake of an apple evreyday.

Beetroots-

Beetroots help in boosting enzymatic activity as they are rich in Vitamin C.

Carrot also helps in preventing fatty liver as it has Vitamin A, which helps in supporting the overall function of the liver.

Green Vegetables-

Green vegetables flush out the toxins from the bloodstream as they are high in chlorophyll. You can add healthy greens like spinach, green peas, okra, kale, broccoli, lettuce, etc.
