Rangers Deployed for SCO Summit Security

The federal government has decided to deploy Rangers in Islamabad’s Red Zone to upgrade the security plan ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, scheduled for October 15-16, 2024.

They are trying to keep the rule of law and order in this region due to the big event going to start. They thus plan to keep the paramilitary Rangers in the capital till the end of the summit. Rangers were deployed outside various key governmental buildings and along the internal roads of the Red Zone.

The government, on Wednesday, gave the green light to a comprehensive security plan in respect of the SCO summit in the wake of a meeting presided over by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. The entire gamut of this security plan has various features: ensuring that the atmosphere is safe for all attendees.

Meanwhile, India has confirmed it had received an invitation from Pakistan to join the SCO Council of Heads of Government in-person meeting in October that Pakistan is going to host. This was in August when Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal was addressing a weekly media briefing. He mentioned that the Ministry of External Affairs had no updates to share at that moment.

He said in response to a media query, “Yes, we have an invitation from Pakistan for the SCO meeting that is to happen. We will update you on the situation later.”

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation is an intergovernmental international organization that was established on June 15, 2001, in Shanghai. Its founding states were Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Currently, the SCO has nine member states: India, Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan.

SCO also includes three observer states: Afghanistan, Mongolia, and Belarus. At the 2022 SCO Summit in Samarkand, Belarus’s status inside the organization started to rise toward full membership. The SCO also has 14 dialogue partners, including Azerbaijan, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia.

This tightened security in Islamabad reflects the importance of the forthcoming SCO summit. And the requirement for the adoption of efficacious measures to ensure a safe event.
