On Wednesday, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf declared its refusal to allow the proposed constitutional amendments. The party opposes the changes put forward by the incumbent federal government.
During a recent session in parliament, PTI lawmakers walked out as voting started on the controversial 26th Constitutional Amendment. The party has been of the view that the amendments will lead to increased political interference with the judiciary. Particularly regarding the appointment of the Chief Justice and other judges. According to PTI’s view, giving parliament too much authority to decide on judicial matters would be a blow to the concept of the separation of powers.
PTI is stoutly opposed to any amendment that can make judicial independence a laughingstock. “It may be the 27th constitutional amendment or the 28th, the PTI will oppose it,” he said. Akram resolved that his party would keep fighting against any such changes that would bring into question the autonomy of the judiciary.
It is a reaction to that after reports emerged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto were considering plans for a “27th constitutional amendment.” While details are not yet publicly known, the PTI has made its position clear.
PTI also accused the government of gagging the opposition. They maintained, “If the government were not afraid, it would not be taking such steps as house raids on PTI lawmakers or the ‘abduction’ of supporters.” Akram wonders why calls for consensus arise only regarding PTI issues. There are concerns about the political process being free and fair.
Akram also defended Bushra Bibi, wife of PTI founder Imran Khan. “She has no political ambitions,” he said, reiterating, “Imran Khan has decided to keep members of his family out of politics.”
He reiterated, “It is not politics when a wife steps forward for her husband or sisters for their brother.”
PTI intends to continue in solidarity with family members who have been aggressively advocating for the release of Khan. The stout resistance of the party against proposed constitutional changes by the government. Underlines its commitment to protecting judicial independence and a level playing field in Pakistan.
