The Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party over their recent remarks about farm bills. He declared that the “anti-farmer BJP” has kept itself blind to the “grave crime” they perpetrated. Even after the martyrdom of 750 farmers.
Kharge’s reaction was in response to BJP’s Lok Sabha MP Kangana Ranaut’s recommendation. That the three repealed farm laws be brought back after massive protests. Ranaut’s controversial statement had hinted at farmers asking for these laws’ return.
Kharge responded that the 62 crore farmers in this country would not forget how the government treated them during the recent farmers’ agitation. He accused the Modi government of applying severe measures against farmers. By using vehicles, barbed wire, and tear gas in trying to contain the protesting farmers. He said those things would remain etched in the memory of farmers in large parts of the country.
Kharge also threatened the BJP with repercussions from farmers in general, especially in Haryana, where assembly elections are due shortly. He said that farmers would now rise to take on Prime Minister Modi for his “inflammatory” remarks. Referring to them as “agitators” and “parasites.”
The 90-member Haryana legislative assembly will go to polls on October 5. While the votes will be counted along with those of Jammu and Kashmir on October 8. Kharge further said the BJP ministers and MPs have developed an addiction to insulting farmers. While hatching propaganda machinery to devalue the sacrifices made by the agricultural community.
Kharge blamed the Modi government for failing to fulfill the three major promises it had made to farmers over the last ten years. These are: to double farmers’ income by 2022, to implement MSP based on the Swaminathan Report. And to grant legal status to MSP. He also referred to the fact that the committee announced by Modi to take care of farmers’ concerns has not achieved anything so far and has remained inactive.
He also attacked the BJP for not offering any solace to the families of farmers who lost their lives during protests. Also, he indicated the inability of the government to pay respects in the form of observing a minute of silence in Parliament. And character assassination of farmers.
Kharge signed off by saying that the “anti-farmer feeling” has “ingrained” itself in the BJP’s ideology. After the damage was done, the BJP washed its hands of the comments made by Kangana Ranaut. On the farm stir by stating that Ranaut’s remarks reflect her “personal opinion and not the party’s stand on farm laws.” The BJP termed Ranaut’s statement as a personal opinion. “It does not reflect our party’s view,” BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said.
