The country has formally submitted the candidature for staging the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games. A formal ‘Letter of Intent’ was sent by the Indian Olympic Association to the IOC Future Host Commission. On October 1st for staging the mega event in the country.
This indeed forms a significant milestone in the journey of sports in India. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports very well confirmed the feat as a translation of the nation’s interest. And commitment towards its goal of becoming the hub for global sports events.
The pace of India’s sports journey has gathered great momentum in the last couple of years. A total of six medals were won by the country at the recently concluded Paris Olympics. Of which five came in the form of bronze and one in silver. These feats are a testimony to the growing strength of India in competitions at the international stage, which is a good omen for the mega events like the Olympics that India will be hosting in the future.
In September, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated India’s bid to host the Games in 2036. Addressing the Indian diaspora at Nassau Coliseum in New York, Modi sounded confident and said, “Very soon you will see the Olympics in India too. We are making all possible efforts to host the 2036 Olympics.” His statement brought to renewal a commitment by the government to make India a big player in international sports.
This will be part of the broader initiative to build a robust sporting culture in India. At multi-sport events, India’s performance has been impressive for several years. During the Hangzhou Asian Games and Para Asian Games 2022. It crossed the 100-plus medal mark for the first time-107 and 111 medals, respectively. Certainly, this success has been proof that the country is gathering momentum in hosting. And competing in major international sporting events.
Likewise, the Indian sports journey has been of moments that are marked by remarkable feats of clinching major medals. From the Commonwealth Games. India managed to win a total of 61 medals at the 2022 edition in Birmingham. While it won 101 medals in the 2010 edition, hosted by the country itself in its capital Delhi. These just underline the rise of improving sporting infrastructure and developments in the country’s athletes.
A continuum of this upward trajectory is also what India looks forward to with its official bid to host the 2036 Olympics. Improving sports infrastructure, training systems. And programs for athlete development are some of the key areas the country is working on. Hosting the Olympic Games will boost India’s international sports profile and inspire a new generation of athletes as well.
A dream to host the 2036 Olympics is getting closer to reality as India is still growing as a sporting nation.
