Google Photos Upgrades Search with AI

Google Photos is introducing major features into its search to make finding certain images simpler and more natural queries. The new set of features will make finding photos faster and a whole lot more intuitive.

These updates will ultimately enable users to feed in queries. For instance, like “Gigi Hadid playing with daughter” and get the picture results instantly. According to GSM Arena, this is enabled by updates that allow conversational AI to capture user requests and process them better.

The new review feature introduced makes sorting of results by date or relevance possible. The flexibility increases the speed at which one locates a photo and also improves the accuracy of the results.

Today, the new search functionality is available to English-speaking users for both Android and iOS. Google said it’s going to start supporting more languages in the coming weeks to help more people around the world access the feature.

Coupled with those updates, Google Photos has introduced a new feature called ‘Ask Photos’ as the company begins the rollout of it to some users in the US. This is available through Google Labs for people on the waitlist. And it uses the advanced capabilities of Gemini AI to enhance the search experience.

‘Ask Photos’ allows users to ask detailed questions about their photo galleries. You can ask something like, “When did we dine at the airport in Delhi?” and get relevant details. According to the context of your photos-including people, places, and activities.

This works like a chatbot of some sort, meaning the new feature has a conversational user interface-one where users can log in with their query in case they don’t get proper results from a simple search. According to GSM Arena, the AI-powered feature, driven by Gemini’s sophisticated models, will summarize trip highlights. Suggest the best photos from events, and offer more personalized search results.

Google also notes that human reviewers might examine queries submitted through ‘Ask Photos’ for service improvement. However, the review happens only after disconnecting queries from the user’s Google Account to maintain privacy. Generally, humans do not see results from ‘Ask Photos,’ except in rare instances for user feedback or to address abuse or harm.

Taken together, this is quite a leap forward for Google Photos, regarding both the velocity and relevance of photo searches. Let alone adding a new layer of interactivity with the ‘Ask Photos’ feature.
