Google Maps Rolls Out Lane Guidance, Weather Alerts & More

Google Maps is soon to implement various changes to make driving through cities easier. Starting next month, new features in navigation will start to roll out that will make driving through busy cities much easier and a great deal safer.

The biggest upgrade here is the Enhanced Lane Guidance. The app will now point out which lane a driver should be in when it’s time for a turn. It also will flash important road details like crosswalks, traffic signs, and lane restrictions. This will arrive in 30 major U.S. cities starting this November. And yes, the feature will be available on Android and iOS devices.

The update builds on other features already available, like lane guidance and 3D route views, that help make driving in unfamiliar areas much easier. It’s all in aid of helping the driver feel more confident at tricky junctions or busy streets.

Besides guidance on lanes, Google Maps is also working to extend destination guidance. Users will now have improved information about their final destination. These include highlighting building entrance points and nearby car parks. The application will further remind users where they have parked and provide walking guidance to enter the buildings from the correct entrance.

Another useful update would be to include weather updates. The service would indicate what the state of the weather is: fog, snow, flooding, or poor visibility. This would be helpful as it would assist drivers in maintaining safety during bad weather.

Along with these enhancements in navigation, Google is integrating more AI to make user experiences seamless. The application will suggest new places that one might want to go to, recommend restaurants to dine at, and even summarize reviews for electric vehicle chargers.

Meanwhile, Waze, another navigation service from Google, has begun testing a voice-activated incident reporting feature as a way for drivers to improve real-time updates by more easily reporting accidents or hazards on the road.

Various improvements are continuously being added to the mapping services offered by Google. These are new features in the application, meaning users will soon drive more easily and safely.
