Google has introduced a new feature to its AI-powered note-taking app, NotebookLM. The latest feature, Audio Overview, converts the users’ research into virtual, AI-generated podcasts.
Last year, Google introduced new features, and now this experimental addition enhances user interaction with their notes and research materials. The Audio Overview feature utilizes Google’s Gemini AI model to convert written research into an audio format.
For example, with Audio Overview, users can input their research into NotebookLM and receive a synthesized audio summary delivered by virtual hosts. These AI hosts summarize the material, connect various topics, and engage in lively banter, creating an audio version of what was previously available only in text.
The feature aims at rendering thick research findings into engaging content. At an internal test, the AI-generated podcast delivered an animated discussion about the invention of the lightbulb. The virtual hosts chatted about Thomas Edison and how, really, it was a story of teamwork, making the dream work.
Nevertheless, the tendency of the AI hosts to hold dialogues genuinely was underpinned by quirky behaviors. For example, spelling out words like “P-L-U-S” and using slang expressions such as “bling bling metal” when referring to platinum. The specific aspects bring into focus that these are areas in which the AI continues working for refinement.
However, the feature has limitations, and the users must know about them. Audio Overview represents users’ notes rather than providing a comprehensive or objective view of a topic. Generating a podcast can be quite time-consuming. Additionally, the feature is currently available only in English, which limits non-English speakers.
Users should be cautious not to rely solely on this feature for critical information. The accuracy of the AI changes, which may not give precise details at any moment. Just like any AI-generated content, cross-checking is vital for information to be reliable, to say the least.
All it takes is a few simple steps to try out this new feature. Open any notebook in NotebookLM and click on the Notebook guide in the bottom right corner of the screen. Immediately after, select “Audio Overview” to generate your AI-powered podcast.
In sum, this new feature of Google, Audio Overview in NotebookLM, is a massive step toward interactive and appealing research. This feature allows users to have their research findings in a new innovative way by leveraging AI in podcast-style summaries. And, who knows? Maybe as time and technology evolve, it’s going to offer even more exciting possibilities for transforming how we interact with information.
