The Sharjah Book Authority will host librarians and experts in the field from around the world at the 11th edition of the Sharjah International Library Conference on November 9-10. In cooperation with the American Library Association, SILC 2024 will be held in conjunction with the 43rd Sharjah International Book Fair at Expo Centre Sharjah. Permitting both physical and virtual participation.
As the only ALA-affiliated conference outside the United States, SILC 2024 is a leading platform for overseas librarians to explore the latest trends. This year’s event will welcome more than 400 experts from over 30 countries. Including 100 librarians from the UAE—the highest local participation in SILC history.
Under the theme “Integration of AI into Library Service and Promotion of AI Literacy,” the conference will discuss how AI technologies are enhancing efficiency in libraries and creating innovative services. The participants will proceed with discussions on the applications of AI in managing libraries and improving user experience.
The conference features an immersive program comprising workshops by experts, engaging panels, and case studies on key topics. Inclusive sustainable development and school library innovations. Winners of the Emirates Literature Foundation’s School Librarian of the Year Award will share best practices to enrich the sessions.
Many of the sessions not only echo the conference theme but also explore how to interface these new technologies. “The Experimental Library: How to Take Risks, Fail Forward, and Create Change” will demonstrate how startup methodologies can be applied to improve library services. “Reimagining Library Access and Support with Conversational AI” will discuss the very real possibilities of offering customized services with AI. Other sessions, such as “Integrating AI into School Libraries,” will reveal ways AI can revolutionize library marketing.
The conference reminds us that libraries are not only a repository of books. But also play an essential role in education and building the community. “The Playful Library: Building Environments for Learning and Creativity” describes the building of spaces for collaborative learning. While “Building News Literacy” deals with teaching critical thinking in today’s information-saturated world.
Besides that, SILC offers sessions for enriching skills and sharing knowledge. “Reimagining the Libraries and Librarians of the Future” addresses future challenges. Sessions such as “The High-Impact Digital Library: Innovative Approaches for Outreach” will arm librarians with practical tools.
The incomparable networking opportunities the SILC offers through the Librarian’s Lounge. And the Exhibitor Zone creates the best avenue to share ideas with other participants and industry vendors, thus enriching the experience. Over the years, the comprehensive agenda of SILC has continued to inspire innovation in library services. And has further cemented Sharjah’s status as a cultural hub.
