Ambuja Cements, part of Adani Group, has signed up to become the world’s first cement company to join the Alliance for Industry Decarbonization, a global grouping of companies across industries that accelerates the transition towards Net Zero in line with the Paris Agreement.
Ambuja Cements aspires to reach Net Zero by 2050. The goals have been independently ratified by the SBTi, added the statement. It plans to spend ₹100 billion on renewable projects. This includes the addition of 1 GW of renewable energy capacity and 376 MW from its WHRS. Green energy would account for 60% of Ambuja’s expanded capacity by FY2028.
This would have a disproportionately lower carbon footprint and thus create economic value in return. Ambuja Cements said it used more than 8.6 million tonnes of waste-derived resources in the last fiscal. Further, the company achieved water positivity 11 times and plastic negativity 8 times in FY24.
Karan Adani, Non-Executive Director of Ambuja Cements, underlined the importance of becoming a member of AFID. He said, “This is yet another milestone in the sustainability journey of Ambuja. Already, we are among the lowest emission-intensity cement manufacturers in the world. Membership in AFID will provide us an excellent opportunity to understand and learn from other industries while sharing our strategies on decarbonization.”.
Alliance for Industry Decarbonization should develop the needed dialogue and coordination among companies. It shall support firms in the elaboration of effective decarbonization strategies that will help countries meet their commitments. The activity of the alliance is facilitated by IRENA, making sure that the members will be able to work effectively.
Ambuja’s participation in AFID is a sure sign that the company means business in terms of sustainability. As a so-called CO2-emitting industry, this is quite an important step. Ambuja can rethink its strategy and show the way by sharing insight and experiences with other companies.
In short, Ambuja Cements is making strong and bold strides toward these sustainability goals. Joining hands with the Alliance for Industry Decarbonization is part of this journey. With the investment that the company has undertaken in renewable energy and waste management, it also seriously demonstrates a commitment to bringing down environmental impact. This ambitious plan places Ambuja at a new benchmark within the cement industry. It aspires to inspire others to battle against climate change.
