Marking a major update in the DC Universe, Aaron Pierre has been cast as John Stewart in the highly anticipated series Lanterns for HBO.
He will be playing the role of John Stewart- arguably one of the most famous Green Lanterns in the DC Universe his most famous role to date in Rebel Ridge. Kyle Chandler is reportedly finalizing negotiations to star as Hal Jordan alongside Aaron Pierre, according to Deadline.
Pierre ‘s casting follows a very strenuous search wherein Pierre, with the actor Stephen James, emerged as one of the front-runners for the role. After this exhaustive process, Pierre’s performance stood out to make him the preferred choice for playing John Stewart.
Lanterns, in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios, is a story that follows Lantern newbie John Stewart together with veteran Lantern Hal Jordan. The series pushes them through the paces together, right into the jaws of a lethal mystery set on Earth, at the investigation of a murder in the heart of America.
The series is also said to run for eight episodes, with the showrunner from Ozark, Chris Mundy, at the helm. Mundy will helm the series and lead the show through. Other noted writers, Damon Lindelof of Watchmen fame. And comic book writer Tom King will also be part of the project as co-writers and executive producers.
James Hawes will direct the first two episodes and will also serve as an executive producer, according to Deadline.
Meanwhile, Pierre has seen acclaim for his lead role in Rebel Ridge and has a formidable list of projects in his pipeline. Aaron Pierre will also voice the character Mufasa in Barry Jenkins’ animated prequel to The Lion King. Pierre is currently shooting on The Morning Show at Apple TV+. And recently played the role of Malcolm X in National Geographic’s series Genius: MLK/X.
