The music world is reeling in the unbelievable demise of Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan. The singer, whose real name was Dequantes Lamar, died on September 5, 2024, aged 33 years.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner has now confirmed to Billboard that he is indeed dead. “On September 5, 2024, the Fulton County Medical Examiner was notified by Grady Memorial Hospital about the passing of Dequantes Devontay Lamar,” they say. An autopsy will be performed on September 6, 2024, to determine his cause of death, which is currently still under investigation.
Rich Homie Quan born Dequantes Lamar, burst onto the scene in the early 2010s as a rapper who scored big hits like “Type of Way” and “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh).” His songs propelled him to a significant amount of attention and visibility within the rap world. TMZ was the first to report the news of his death, which has been followed by tributes from both fans and other musicians.
Boosie Badazz was among the myriad that shared this sad news on X: “JUST GOT WORD @RichHomieQuan JUST [DIED]. JUST TALK TO WUAN THE OTHER DAY.” He went on to give his respects, “#tipQUAN Never go forget yo smile n the way you talked n of course yo music.”
Jacquees, who was a close collaborator of Quan’s. Took to social media to pay a touching tribute to the late rapper. Jacquees expressed his pain, stating, “Rest in peace my brother Rich Homie Quan. I Love you for life. #Richgang.” He also posted a photo of himself and Quan on the site.
Playboi Carti took to Instagram to pay tribute to Quan with clips and photos of him. And the rapper, among others, including Young Thug. Quavo, with whom he had also collaborated. Took to his Instagram Story to do so; shots of the Migos alongside Rich Homie Quan and Young Thug. “May god be with the US never saw this as part of our journey,” he wrote, adding he’s in a sad place.
Rich Homie Quan wasn’t a hero to many eyes. But he was and is one of the reasons for a change in the rap arena. His single “Type of Way” peaked at No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 back in 2013. Additionally, his feature on YG’s “My Hitta” and Rich Gang’s “Lifestyle” sealed his ranking. His solo song “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)” also reached No. 12 on the Hot 100 in July 2015, according to Billboard.
Notwithstanding that the past couple of years have focused mostly on independent releases, Quan’s influence never really wavered. His catalog has tallied 3.34 billion on-demand official US streams. In 2022, he issued the project “Family & Mula – Reloaded” via Rich Homie Entertainment.
One of Rich Homie Quan’s last recognizable public appearances was in May 2024, during Jack Harlow’s inaugural Gazebo Festival. His passing is a great loss to the music world. And his services to the rap genre will be remembered by fans and fellow artists alike.
