India has made a significant move towards sending humanitarian aid to the people of Palestine amid the Middle East conflict. The first consignment comprises 30 tons of essential items, including medicines, surgical supplies, dental products, general medical items, and high-energy biscuits.
The assistance will be provided through the United Nations Relief and Work Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East. This assistance would provide much-needed help for the people of Palestine in view of the day-to-day degradation of the humanitarian situation.
Randhir Jaiswal, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, tweeted on X: “India sends humanitarian assistance for the people of Palestine through UNRWA.” He said, “The first tranche of assistance, consisting of 30 tons of medicines and food items, has departed today. The consignment comprises basic medicines, surgical accessories, dental items, general medical items, and high-energy biscuits.”
This move comes as the situation in Gaza grows increasingly dire. Recently, the World Food Programme warned that supplies were running out in northern Gaza. The WFP stated on October 12, “Escalating violence in northern Gaza is having a disastrous impact on food security. No food aid has entered the north since October 1. It is unclear how long WFP’s remaining food supplies will last.”
Meanwhile, on 20 October, the United Nations reiterated calls for an end to the war in Gaza. The UN stressed once more the urgent need to free the hostages, to stop the displacement of Palestinians, and to have access to humanitarian aid without obstacles.
Tor Wennesland, the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, expressed deep concern about the situation’s aggravation. “The nightmare in Gaza is getting worse,” said Wennesland. “Scenes of horror are unfolding in the northern Strip amid fighting, relentless Israeli strikes, and an ever-worsening humanitarian crisis.”
In recent remarks, UNRWA also described the living conditions in the Gaza Strip as “inhumane.” The agency said that piles of waste accumulate in central Gaza. And sewage is leaking onto the streets. “Families have no choice but to live next to this accumulated waste. Exposing them to foul odors and the imminent risk of a health disaster,” the agency said. UNRWA called for an immediate ceasefire to address the humanitarian situation.
Humanitarian aid by India is one of the important steps in support of the people of Palestine during this period of crisis.
